This Japanese restaurant is one of my favorites in town, and during COVID times carryout orders placed from their website have been very convenient. Their hibachi grill meals, bento box combos, sushi bowls, and kid’s meals have all been consistently filling and satisfying. This is definitely a must-try for the area.

Danielle’s Country Sandwiches (UPDATE: CLOSED)
Updated, 1-Jan-2022: Sadly, Danielle’s closed in March of 2021.
Normally, when I stop by Danielle’s it’s for breakfast and I’m either staying there to have the platter or I’m getting a breakfast sandwich to go. But sometimes I stop by for a turkey sandwich for lunch and every time I do I wonder why I don’t stop by more often. Everything is made just right, with the meat piled high and a really modest price. I recommend pairing it with a side of potato salad.

Purdy’s Coffee Co.
Mmmm we love Purdy’s! Especially their new location with a drive through and parking lot that makes it much more accessible when we’re on the go with the kids. Now, they might not have the best espresso I’ve ever tried (sorry, that might have to go to Stumptown) but its not all about just the coffee. The atmosphere is right, the staff is right, the menu is well balanced, and their breakfast options are available all day! If you were passing through Richmond and only had time to stop by one place for a coffee and some lunch, or maybe a cinnamon roll, then this would be the one place to stop and try out.
Note that they have two locations – one on Big Hill Avenue and another on Main Street. Each is a bit unique but both have a great atmosphere. Visit their website to learn more.
Barnes Mill Animal Hospital
I’ve seen a couple of different doctors here, including Dr Jack Taylor, and they have all been very helpful with my 12 year old labrador. Sometimes their schedule can be a little tight, but they are busy because they are good.

Richmond Detail
When we purchased a used car in 2019 it appeared clean but we still brought it here to get some help cleaning the cloth seats before we really started using our car. These folks did a great job helping us out and we’re glad we did because the waste water in their machine when we got done told us the seats were much dirtier than we thought. They also did the work quickly and for a bargain of a price!
They can be a little hard to find on Big Hill Ave, across the street from Sonic and down behind some other shops.

Craft Restaurant and Artistry (UPDATE: CLOSED)
Updated, 1-Jan-2022: Sadly, Craft closed in August of 2021.
Craft is an upgrade on the old Meeples location in downtown Richmond. They have a creative menu and are worth a visit. You can also order online and they offer delivery.

Nutrition Center
I visited here once while on a hunt for a specific vitamin that I was unable to find at two other local places. They had what I needed at a price I expected and the staff member was very helpful. I also visited another time looking for other items and a different staff member was in there and he was also very helpful, so I do recommend visiting.

Camp Catalpa
Park-Disc Golf/Playground/Trails
Camp Catalpa is a great place for shaded trails and a nice walk. It runs next to Lake Reba, has some (limited) playground equipment, and some steeper elevations on the trails.
There are a variety of pictures on their website:

Food Trucks
Revision History:
Initially posted 12-Jan-2020
Revised 17-Aug-2020
Revised 1-Jan-2022
I love food trucks! You never know what you’re going to find, and their whole premise is a perfect example of the entrepreneurial spirit bootstrapping a new business idea. The downside to the business model can be that most of them don’t spend much time or money looking in to building a big web presence other than maybe a social media account. To help remedy that I’ve tried to compile a list of the ones the area that I’ve run in to.
First, though, here’s an incomplete list of common places you can find some of these food vendors:
- Abettor Brewing (Winchester, KY)
- Berea Main Street
- Bluegrass Barrel House
- Dreaming Creek Brewery
- Liquor Mart II
- Lowe’s
- Office Depot
- The Botany Bay
